Season one of Inflect Health’s new podcast For Startups, By Physicians is off to a great start.

For the third installment of the show, “Brain Health,” I talk to Vituity Neurologists Dr. Arbi Ohanian and Dr. Yafa Minazad about how technology has transformed Neurology and what’s essential to keep the progress up.

If you’re a technologist working on solutions for neurology, this is the episode for you: Click here to listen.

“Neurology has gone from a contemplative type field to a therapeutic or treatment field due to the incredibly advancement in technology,” Dr. Ohanian tells me.

Imaging, interventional devices, and telehealth are just some of the ways that neurology has transformed. Patients today are able to receive quick and thorough care that just fifteen years ago would have been unheard of such as remote access to EEG tests.

So where might technology enable neurology to reach in the next ten years?

According to Dr. Minazad, physicians are looking forward to advancing technology that enables physicians to remove clots from the brain in even better ways.

The journey doesn’t stop there though. While technology advances, patients are also requiring new perspectives for treatment. An aging population means physicians must look ahead to address their differing needs through home care and alternative methods to reach patients where they are.

So what should healthtech startups know about what it takes to build for physicians?

For starters, my guests tell me, more technologists should think of physicians as the end user and what would make the most improvements to their practice. Long wait times and connecting patients to the right specialists are just some of the pain points that neurologists are seeing, not to mention a stagnant workforce population.

In episode two, by the way, I spoke with Dr. Bobbie Kumar and Cat Sartin about the usefulness of technology in healthcare and why clinicians would prefer more considerations for healthtech.
